Barriers to entry for a new brokerage:

  • Every broker must purchase a Proof of Insurance Coverage: a Surety Bond (Form BMC-84) or Trust Fund Agreement (Form BMC-85) in the amount of $75,000

  • A broker with a brand new MC number and no credit history will have extreme limitations placed on them by trucking companies and factoring companies. Carriers will not take loads from brokers unless they pre-pay for the freight.

  • Technology is the key to establishing a quality freight brokerage. Significant capital will be needed to purchase a Transportation Management System, LTL platform, phone system, truckload software, Computers and accounting software.
  • Name recognition with carriers and customers.

  • Will you have enough capital to wait 45 days to get paid by your customers with the ability to pre pay your carriers to get them to take your loads?

  • More and more customers are asking freight brokers to show a proof of insurance. General, Motor and Cargo insurance can exceed several thousands of dollars per year depending on the volume of freight shipped.
